Hydroxyapatite/alumina (HAp/Al2O3) composite nanopowders containing 10, 20, and 30 % wt Al2O3 were synthesized via sol-gel method followed by a calcination step. For the synthesis of HAp/Al2O3 composite nanopowders the Ca/p atomic ratio was kept at 1.67. The prepared nanopowders were characterized by simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction Phase analysis indicated the successful formation of HAp after a low temperature calcination process at 300 0C. The degree of crystalinity in the sol-gel synthesized nanopwders increased after calcination at 600 0C. However, the formation of B- tricalcium phosphate(TCP) initiated after heat treatment at this tempereture and the amount of B-TCP not increased with the increase in the alumina content in the composite powder. Morphological evaluation of the powder sample calcined at 900 0C for 1hr, revealed the formation of sphere shaped HAp particles having the diameters in the range of 38-110 nm. The details on the processing as well as characterization results will be presented at this conference. |
