Polyamide6/Polypropylene (PA6/PP = 67/33 parts) nanocomposites were prepared using twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. The influence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) as a compatibilizer and the effect of nano-sized precipitated calcium carbonate (NPCC) concentrations as a reinforcement on the mechanical properties and water absorption of PA6/PP nanocomposites were investigated. The incorporation of PP-g-MAH and NPCC into PA6/PP decreased the amount of water absorption and significantly improved the impact strength. The maximum impact strength was achieved at loading 7.5 phr (parts per hundred resin) of NPCC. Tensile strength and modulus were slightly affected by incorporating NPCC into polymeric matrix. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) study indicated that the addition of PP-g-MAH led to a uniform structure of PA6/PP/NPCC composites. |
