Nanoparticles of titania has antibacterial property against many kinds of bacteria and this property of it would increase by reducing of particles size and increasing of surface to volume ratio. In this study nanoparticless of titania were added to dental amalgam to enhance its antibacterial property. In order to investigate the proper amount 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 percent of nanoparticles of titania were added to amalgam alloy powder and the mixed powder was triturated by a given percent of mercury. X-ray diffraction, electron scanning microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanocomposites. The samples were held at 37○C for one week and then potentiodynamic polarization corrosion test was performed. This corrosion test was done at 0.9 wt% NaCl solution as electrolyte. The results indicated that corrosion of the new dental amalgam changes a bit with adding nanoparticles of titania and the addition of nanoparticles of titania to dental amalgam seems to be a promising action to improve the properties of this dental material. |
