| Abstract: |
| Development of microstructure during sol-gel synthesis of an alumina-YAG composite has been studied. Microstructural analysis has shown that YAG precipitates appear in two distinct forms, as follows: (a) isolated grains with an average size of about 0.5 m, and (b) nano-sized precipitates distributed evenly within alumina grains. Development of this characteristic microstructure is interpreted in view of a metastable phase diagram, incorporating a solvus between YAG and metastable alumina. Formation of isolated grains of YAG is considered to relate to this solvus. Accordingly, formation of nano-sized YAG precipitates is attributed to the drop in yttrium solubility, which occurs during the transition from metastable to stable alumina. |
