Magnetite nano-particles were prepared by two different chemical methods. In the first method, the synthesis of nano-particles was carried out by using an alkaline solution of mixed ferrous/ferric salts along with oleic acid, as a surfactant, at 70°C. In the second method, synthesis of nano-particles was done by hydrolysis of aqueous solution of ferrous/ferric salts with potassium hydroxide at room temperature. The nano-particles were characterized by scanning electron measurement (SEM) and also light scattering (DLS) for particle size measurements. X-Ray diffraction experiments (XRD) was carried out to distinguish possible different phases formed during the synthesis. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and ultraviolet visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy were used for the analysis of the characteristic chemical structure of the nano-particles. The ferromagnetic behavior of the nano-particles was measured by vibration sample magnetometry (VSM). It was found that the nano-particles prepared by the second method had smaller diameters and were of higher magnetization. The magnetization values of the nano-particles prepared by co-precipitation and hydrolysis methods were 25.5 emu/g and 28.6 emu/g respectively. |
